Days 1-2 Fly to Beijing
Fly overnight to Beijing, China's historical capital. Depending on your time of arrival the rest of the day is yours to start soaking up the local culture.
Day 3 Forbidden City
Heading to Beijing's symbolic heart, stroll across Tiananmen Square and into the sprawling magnificence of the Forbidden City where you will find a complex full of imperial riches. Soak up the harmonious ambiance of the Temple of Heaven, an orderly oasis in a bustling urban landscape, where you can watch, or participate in, a dance class. This evening sit down to a traditional dinner of Peking Duck.
Days 4-5 Imperial Chengde
This morning visit the Summer Palace and the Pearl Factory before traveling by coach to Chengde, the former summer getaway of the Manchu (Qing) emperors. The next day, visit the stunning Imperial Mountain Villas, then the Tibetan-inspired Puning Temple, and the more modest but equally beautiful Puyou Temple.
Day 6 Great Wall of China
Return to Beijing via the Magnificent Great Wall of China. Rise by cable car onto the Simatai section of the wall for breathtaking views.
Days 7-8 Terracotta Warriors, Xian
This morning take the bullet train to Xian. Visit the Little Wild Goose Pagoda and Muslim Quarter. Tonight, feast on traditional Shui Jiao dumpling before a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing. The next day, visit the enigmatic ranks of warriors that make up the Terracotta Army. Visit the workshop of the craftsmen who recreate warriors in the style of their ancient counterparts. Watch the skilled production process and choose to purchase one to take home. Later stroll Xian's 14th century city walls and explore the atmospheric Muslim Quarter.
Day 9 Train to Wuhan
Take the bullet train to Wuhan and transfer to Yichang to board your Yangtze River Cruise vessel.
Days 10-12 Yangtze River Cruise
The Three Gorges Dam showcases a massive feat of engineering but as we cruise upstream nature takes over, revealing some of world’s most dramatic scenery including the Three Gorges themselves. Over the next three days prepare for one breath-taking panorama after another, and take a side trip to the attractive Shennong Stream or Goddess Stream and the Shibaozhai Temple or Fengdu Ghost City.
Day 13 Drive to Chengdu
Disembark and explore old Ciqikou, whose narrow streets are perfect for a stroll to admire the traditional architecture. Transfer to Chengdu.
Day 14 Pandas & Matchmaker's Corner
Today we will visit China’s most famous resident, the Giant Panda. Visit the Panda Conservation Centre where you can learn about China’s celebrated bear. See these lovable creatures in surroundings that mirror their natural habitat. Later you will make a visit to Matchmaker’s Corner in People’s Park where parents search for worthy suitors for their children.
Day 15 Chengdu to Zhongdian
Take an early morning flight to the monastery town of Zhongdian, also known as Shangri-La. Visit Zhongdian's Old Town where you will see authentic Tibetan dwellings, prayer halls and pagodas; also visit the Dafo Temple.
Days 16 Zhongdian
Today visit the Songzanlin Monastery, one of the most significant centres of Tibetan Buddhism outside of Tibet. Later travel to a Tibetan Village where you will pay a visit to a local family and gain an insight into how they live.
Day 17 Tiger Leaping Gorge
The 3000-metre deep Tiger Leaping Gorge, with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains, is one of China's most extraordinary sights. The whole area is spectacular - prepare for breathtaking views before you travel on to Lijiang.
Day 18 Jade Dragon Mountain
A magnificent mountain, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain incorporates several peaks, the tallest of which is 5,500 metres. Taking a chairlift, explore one of the gorgeous high meadows and enjoy the amazing vistas. Visit Baisha Old Town to view the fascinating murals, painted during the early Ming Dynasty.
Day 19 Black Dragon Pool, Lijiang
The quintessential Chinese 'old town', Lijiang's old quarter is a jumble of cobbled streets, precarious wooden buildings and rustic stone bridges - in short, a delightful place to aimlessly wander. Also visit Black Dragon Pool where there are wonderful views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Travel to Dali and explore the lively Foreigners Street.
Days 20-21 Enchanting Dali
Dali is a charming place to visit. Explore the old quarter and pop over to Xizhou village to browse the local market. At the Yen Family House, an ancient courtyard home, there will be a tye-dye demonstration. The next day visit the Three Pagodas and travel by road to Kunming. Tuck into local Across the Bridge noodles for dinner.
Day 22 Kunming Stone Forest
Explore the fascinating formations of the picturesque Stone Forest.
Days 23 Depart Kunming
Fly home, arriving there the same or following day.
