River Cruise Itinerary
Day 1 Arles
Welcome to France. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the ship where you will be welcomed by your Captain and crew. Tonight enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board. (Please book your flight to arrive into Nice prior to 2pm). (D)

Day 2 Arles
Arles is the capital of Provence, in the remote Carmargue wilderness area. Join your local guide for a walking tour showcasing the highlights of the city in particular the 2000 year old Roman Amphitheatre still in use today, which was originally built to hold 20,000 spectators in the style of the Colosseum in Rome. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax on board and explore Arles further. (B,L,D)

Optional Tour: Hilltop village of Les Baux or Tastes of Provence, visit an olive oil farm (additional cost)

Day 3 Avignon
Avignon has a rich history from Celtic beginnings to being the residence of the Popes and later central to the French Revolution. Although a fortified town, it is the Papal Palace which stands more secure on a hill in the centre of town, its walls are 17–18 feet thick. Your guided walk with a local guide takes you through this historic centre strolling the cobbled laneways and browsing the shops, overlooking the famous 'Pont de Avignon'. The rest of the day is at leisure. EmeraldPLUS this evening to a special Provencal dinner on board hosted by a local chef. (B,L,D)

Optional Tour: Secrets of the Pope’s Palace, a guided walk inside the rambling maze of gothic hallways and rooms inside the palace, OR Excursion to Pont du Gard (additional cost)

Day 4 Tournon
Join your local guide for a walking tour of Tournon, which is dominated by the 16th century castle and Roman ruins, and is nestled in the valley near the steep slopes of le Massif Central, France's 3rd largest mountain range. The area has a long tradition in wine making, including the renowned wine growing centre of Tain l'Hermitage across the river. Emerald Active: Guided biking tour to Glun. This afternoon EmeraldPLUS to a cheese and olive tasting on board. (B,L,D)

Optional Tour: Regional Wine Tasting in Tournon Castle (additional cost)

Day 5 Macon
Enjoy breakfast on the beautiful Saone River in Macon, another important wine region and gateway to the Beaujolais vineyards. Walk the Heritage Trail from Old Saint Vincent to the General Hospital buildings, half–timbered house and Soufflot Chapel, maybe trying some local wines at the many tasting displays in the town. Enjoy time at leisure in the afternoon. (B,L,D)

Optional Tour: Visit to Benedictine Abbey of Cluny (additional cost)

Day 6 Chalon-Sur-Saone - Beaune
Chalon–Sur–Saone is best known as the birthplace of photography and the centre of Burgundy’s wine region. Travel by road to the quaint village of Beaune, where we visit the Hospices de Beaune, one of the finest examples of French fifteenth–century architecture. Marvel at the multi–coloured roofs of this former hospital, now a museum, which has become one of the symbols of Burgundy. Return to the ship for lunch, then depart this afternoon for Lyon. (B,L,D)

Day 7 Lyon
Lyon is France’s third largest city, a former Roman capital positioned at the conference of the Rhone and Saone rivers, which is steeped in history. Your tour starts with a drive to the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, Lyon’s hilltop church, with stunning views over the town. Then pass by the recently re–discovered Roman amphitheatre and walk through the cobbled streets of the gastronomic old town including the secret laneways. (B,L,D)

Optional Tour: Excursion to the medieval town of Perouges (additional cost)

Day 8 Lyon - Paris
After breakfast disembark your river cruise ship and travel by high speed train to Paris. This evening meet your Tour Director and fellow travellers at a welcome reception at your hotel. (B)

Day 9 Paris Sightseeing
A sightseeing tour with a local guide takes you to see Notre Dame Cathedral famous for the tale of Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre Dame. See the Obelisk in the centre of the Place de la Concorde and drive along the elegant Champs Élysees to the Arc de Triomphe. Enjoy a sightseeing cruise on the River Seine finishing at the Eiffel Tower. This tour will give you an excellent overview of the city. Our day is completed with a Parisian dinner. (B,D)

Day 10 Paris at Leisure
Sightseeing is an endless pleasure in Paris, and your Tour Director is on hand to help plan your day to explore the romance capital of the world. Perhaps view the Mona Lisa at the Louvre or stroll the Champs Elysees. (B)

Optional Tour: Palace of Versailles (must be pre-booked, only available on selected dates, additional expense) alternatively Excursion to Domaine de Chantilly (must be pre-booked, only available on selected dates, additional expense) 

Day 11 Paris
After breakfast say goodbye to new found friends and transfer to Charles de Gaulle International Airport for your onward or homebound flight. (B)
